쿠쿠 | Cuckoo

Cuckoo is a  bittersweet and humorous dialogue, a documentary of sorts.  Artist Jaha Koo sits with his electronic friends, three rice cookers. Together they discuss the catastrophic market crash of 1997 and subsequent national phenomena, including unemployment, depression and suicide amongst young people in Korea. This show combines personal experience with political events and reflections on happiness and economic crises as a matter of life or death.

The subject matter is dark, but there’s rich comedy in the wry observations, personal revelations, and of course in the concept itself. This is an account of deep malaise in which the storytellers show enough wit and creativity to suggest that there is, against the odds, hope for the future.

1997년 아시아 금융 위기가 우리 사회에 남긴 상흔은 이십여 년이 지난 현재에도 여전히 짙게 남아있다. 청년 실업이나 양극화 현상 같은 구조적인 문제는 개인의 무능력으로 치부되고, 사회 질서로부터 밀려난 이들은 각박해진 ‘압력 사회’ 속에서 고립될 뿐이다.

<쿠쿠>는 박탈된 경제적 주권과 배제된 사회적 구성원에 관한 이야기다. 작가 구자하는 압력밥솥을 해킹하여 로보틱-퍼포머로 만들고 그들과 함께 무대에 오른 다. 해킹된 밥솥들과의 대화를 통해, 아시아 금융 위기와 관련한 정치적 사건, 경제 위기 그리고 행복과 죽음에 대해 성찰하며 한국의 지난 이십여 년의 역사를 돌아본다. <쿠쿠>는 하마티아 3부작의 두 번째 작품이며, 2017년 오스트리아 슈타이리셔 헤르프스트 페스티벌 (Steirischer Herbst, Graz)에서 국제 초연되었다.

The Hamartia Trilogy

Cuckoo forms the second part of Jaha Koo’s Hamartia Trilogy. Together with Lolling & Rolling and The History of Korean Western Theatre, the trilogy consists of three intelligent documentary theatre performances, each telling a story about ‘hamartia’, Greek for ‘tragic error’. The common thread here is the far-reaching imperialism of the past and present, and its sometimes unexpected personal impact. Each time, Jaha Koo interweaves his personal stories with historical, political and sociological facts. Often themes that involve a clash of Eastern and Western culture: from the clipping of tongues to make it in the West, to the heavy personal toll of Western interference in the macroeconomic sphere.

하마티아 3부작 (The Hamartia Trilogy)

구자하 작가의 중장기 프로젝트 <<하마티아 3부작>>은 동아시아의 정치적 지형과 식민지 역사 그리고 문화적 정체성에 대한 다중 연구 작업이다. ‘하마티아’란 용어는 본래 아리스토텔레스의 시학에서 처음 사용된 극문학 용어로, 그리스 비극에 등장하는 주인공의 ‘비극적 과오나 결함’을 의미한다. 작가는 동시대 한국 사회의 구조적 문제에 대해 살펴보며, 피할 수 없는 과거와 미래를 향해 남겨진 비극적 반영에 대해 고찰하였다.

첫 번째 작업인 <롤링 앤 롤링>에서 작가는 언어 제국주의와 그에 대한 문화적 침묵, 그리고 영어의 패권주의에 대해 조명한다. 두 번째 작업 <쿠쿠>에서는 박탈된 경제적 주권과 배제된 사회적 구성원에 대해 주목하며, 자본주의로부터 촉발된 ‘압력 사회’에 대해 이야기한다. 마지막 작업 <한국 연극의 역사>에서는 타율적 근대화와 문화적 폐허에 대해 집중하며, 독립적이고 주체적인 미래 연극에 대해 모색한다. 작가는 현장 답사, 인터뷰, 자료 연구, 이미지 아카이브 등 조사와 연구를 병행하며 음악, 영상, 텍스트, 오브제 등 다양한 매체 작업을 직접 만들고 연극으로 발표한다. <<하마티아 3부작>>은 2014년부터 제작되었으며, 2021년에 최종 완성되었다.
