Cuckoo opens LIFT the City

LIFT the City opens with Cuckoo at Square Mile’s hidden gem, Bridewell Theatre

LIFT the City is a new, two-year programme designed by London’s favourite biennial festival LIFT to support the post pandemic recovery of London’s Square Mile. In partnership with City of London Corporation, LIFT will bring performances, interventions, talks, outdoor events, workplace wellbeing and LIFT festival 2024 to thousands of workers, residents and visitors in the City of London from September.

Jaha Koo’s Cuckoo will launch the programme on 14th, 15th and 16th September at The Bridewell Theatre. It’s LIFT the City’s first public performance, taking place during the final weekend of Bartholomew’s Fair. Powerful Cuckoo is, “an emotional sensory experience”, a bittersweet, funny show from South Korea created and performed by artist Jah Koo. Cuckoo combines personal experience with political events and reflections on happiness, economic crises and technological loneliness. Together we explore the impact of the financial crash through a quirky conversation with three straight talking rice cookers and projected newsreel footage.

“Jaha Koo breaks through the boundaries between human and machine/robot that we as humans wish to preserve. How we can still be human, is the existential question Jaha Koo formulates in Cuckoo.”

A clever and unique show, seen by audiences in Europe, America and Asia, Cuckoo will have its first London showing with LIFT’s offering to the City of London’s exciting reimagining of Bartholomew’s Fair.

Cuckoo is showing at Bridewell Theatre in Bride Lane, a beautiful hidden gem of a theatre built over the City of London’s first swimming pool.

Tickets are £20. £5 tickets are available for local residents with an EC postcode.

From Winter 2023 LIFT the City will roll out a vibrant cultural offer to the City of London’s workers, residents and visitors, featuring performances, a thinker in residence, creative interventions and short creative performances into City spaces that engage City workers and residents in activities such as writing, learning and development and wellbeing. Alongside public performances, LIFT will be connecting more deeply with the city’s workforce in ways that will impact wellness and encourage new visitors including families to take part in exciting cultural experiences.

LIFT the City is an integral part of a wider programme to re-animate and rejuvenate this historic part of London. LIFT are thrilled to launch LIFT the City during Bartholomew’s Fair, a historic celebration revived for 2023 with a modern twist celebrating contemporary culture and the Square Mile’s unique heritage. LIFT is proud to partner with Destination City, an ambitious programme from the City of London designed to make sure that the Square Mile remains a world-leading destination for workers, visitors and residents.
