SESSION is back for a new tour this summer!
LIFT loves to party so we couldn’t be more excited that one of our smash-hit shows from last year’s festival is back and on the road this summer – bringing some of that Tottenham magic on a national tour and to a town near you!
Produced by MAYK in association with LIFT, SESSION is a LIFT Tottenham Original show featuring live and original Afrobeats tunes from North London music producers Empire Sounds, hip hop and street dance by Steppaz and choreography from the internationally acclaimed choreographer Dan Canham and his team at Still House. This outdoor dance show premiered at Bernie Grant Arts Centre last June before heading to Bristol’s The Station and the National Theatre’s River Stage Festival – gathering a whole bunch of fans along the way:
‘The complex choreography, unstoppable spirit and commitment of these young performers is beyond impressive.’ ★★★★★ To Do List London
‘Still buzzing like crazy from last night’s #SESSION. Those guys came out like full on superheroes. Awesome powers. Total heart.’ Audience member
‘Saw Session tonight. Amazing dancing from a talented group of young people. So much black girl magic.’ Audience member
‘Session is the coolest and most joyful piece of art I’ve seen all year. Amazing young street dancers with killer attitude and live afrobeats & hip hop.’ Audience member
You can catch SESSION at Brighton Festival this weekend (Thu 23 – Sun 26 May at 8.30pm) where it’ll be performed right next to the beach, there’s no need to book and the tickets are ‘pay what you can’.
The show then tours to the following locations:
SESSION started its journey back in 2015 when we invited Dan Canham to Tottenham as part of our first artist residency project in the area – he went to meet Empire Sounds in their studio for an hour and ended up listening to their music with them all night. Find out what happened next in this short 4 minute film.
SESSION is a LIFT Tottenham Original – works made in collaboration with local artists and communities that demonstrate the diverse and creative power of this area of London. It was one of ten brand-new LIFT commissions during LIFT 2018 and wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the LIFT Commissioning Circle. If you’d like to support LIFT in enabling international and local artists to create vital new work for London and beyond, please join the LIFT Commissioning Circle from just £10 a month.
