Mark Ball in conversation with Lyn Gardner
In this short interview, Mark Ball is joined by esteemed theatre critic and LIFT fan, Lyn Gardner in a conversation that reflects on Mark’s eight years as LIFT’s Artistic Director. They cover international theatre, taking risks, staging work outside of conventional theatre spaces, politics and LIFT’s role in post-Brexit Britain and everything in between.
Since joining as Artistic Director and CEO in 2009, Mark Ball has re-established LIFT as one of the world’s leading international arts festivals, bringing critically acclaimed and highly innovative artists to the capital to share the stories of the world with Londoners. He has presided over 133 shows and events, including 57 new commissions that have been seen by over 200,000 people in venues and unusual spaces across London, from the West End to gothic East London cemeteries, to the skies of London and of course, that LIFT site specific staple – a rooftop carpark!
In June 2017, Mark will be moving on from LIFT to join Manchester International Festival as Associate Artistic Director where he’ll be leading on the creation and delivery of the artistic programme for Factory.
