    The Dark Side of Love

    Renato Rocha

Shakespeare’s most painful and poignant moments were staged deep in the Dorfman Hub beneath the Roundhouse.

This unique underground space was transformed into a dreamlike underworld that drew on the rich cultural influences of one of Brazil’s most exciting young directors and was suffused with stunning digital projections.

Renato Rocha is a respected performer in the Brazilian theatre company Companhia Bufomecânica, but also schooled the young actors in the landmark Brazilian film City of God. Created over the period of a year and in conjunction with 14 London teenagers who performed in promenade, The Dark Side of Love was an intense and atmospheric exploration of young love. The audience were encouraged to lose themselves in the action, whilst the characters immersed themselves in the most extreme of emotions as they searched for the light of love glimmering through the darkness.

Immensely evocative... the performances are impressive and bravely intimate...
