Would you let a 9 year old cut your hair?

21 children aged 6 – 12 years from Hallsville Primary School and Canning Town Adventurers took part in eight hairdressing workshops at Trinity Community Centre. These sessions were led by world renowned Canadian arts company Mammalian Diving Reflex along with London barber and visual artist Faisal Abdu’ Allah and hairdresser Simon Pickthorne to teach them skills in layering, barbering and colouring as well as customer service.

They also spent time debating ‘what kids can’t do’ and the role of power in society. Over two days the children provided 40 members of the public with free haircuts at professional salon, Kaizo, in Hoxton.

A leap of faith was required for those brave enough to sit in the salon chair. This was not only a performance for the children but for who they will become. Haircuts by Children playfully engaged with the empowerment of children, with trust in the younger generation and with the thrills and chills of vanity.

I don’t think about it as I do it. I just let my mind and hands do the work.

I never thought I’d see her doing something like this, let alone in another part of London, I’m really proud of her.

A refreshing event. The chance to show trust in children in something so personal as having a haircut. Trusting children to do something they'd never normally do.
