The Black Arm Band

The American Civil Rights movement produced some of the 20th century's most powerful music in the songs of Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye. In Australia the Aboriginal people's own struggle has had its own equally impressive if less recognised soundtrack.

Following the Australian government's apology to the country's native people earlier this year, The Black Arm Band is bringing their Murundak performance to LIFT for their first international date outside of Australia. Featuring a star cast of stellar Aboriginal talent including blues musician Archie Roach, soul singer Joey Geia, reggae artist Bart Willoughby and didgeridoo player Mark Atkins, the 28 artists of The Black Arm Band came together in 2007 to showcase the breadth and wealth of Aboriginal culture.

Introduced by Pete Postlethwaite, Murundak unites Australia's foremost artists in both celebration and defiance as they tell the history of the Aboriginal people's struggle for survival through the anthems of resistance sung by the oldest culture on earth.
