Australia’s Back to Back Theatre company have been providing a platform for intellectually-disabled performers for over 20 years, creating challenging and critically-acclaimed works such as ‘small metal objects’ which have toured around the world.
For LIFT 2010 Back to Back Theatre will be joining forces with Australian jazz trio The Necks for FOOD COURT, a dazzling tour-de-force which displays all the performers’ myriad talents to full and disturbing effect.
Presented as part of the barbicanbite 10 season, FOOD COURT tells the story of one woman’s near death experience in an alternative suburban universe, taking the form of a sensory overload of blinding light, energetic acting, shocking imagery and The Necks’ live improvised jazz score. Nearly losing not just her life but also her dignity, the themes of humiliation and society’s inhumanity make FOOD COURT often provocative and occasionally difficult to watch, yet also provoke a riot of thoughts and emotions which linger long in the mind.
“Food Court is a triumph…a work of devastating honesty and, ultimately, extraordinary beauty that confirms Back to Back as a key player in contemporary theatre.” - The Australian
