Bus to Brighton (a lift outing to see Rimini Protokoll)
On Thursday last, a brave minibus driver and his vehicle transported the lift team to sunny Brighton to sip alcohol on the seafront (out of working hours) and taste local cuisine supplied by Harry Ramsdens chippie. But these were just condiments to our main reason for venturing out of London on a school night. We were there to sample Best Before by Rimini Protokoll before they travel up the M23 to London to take part in this years LIFT festival.
A show where the audience are given computer controllers allowing each audience member to interact with the cast by means of a personal avatar on screen behind the performers. Throughout the evening you live the lifetime of your avatar, making responses or choices to the obstacles in your 'rites of passage' that the performers create. I was married, had two kids, divorced and lost a child all within half an hour. At one point Jillian was president, Kate won an audience race and Pete moved abroad. Gosh, a rollercoaster of an evening. We all walked away wondering what we would do with Dolly Parton, Jimmy Krankiee and a pasty.
